Opportunity of the studying abroad, purpose

At university, I majored in Japanese studies and learned about Japanese history, culture, society, and economy and industry.I felt that there was a limit to how much I could understand about Japan through lecture hall study alone. I became interested in the exchange student system at my university to make up for the lack of actual life and experience in Japan. I decided to participate in the exchange program because I felt that experience in Japan was essential to improve my Japanese language skills naturally and fluently. Through this exchange program, I would like to gain practical experience in Japanese society and culture, as well as further improve my Japanese language skills. I would also like to form a local network and become more competitive in my job search in Japan in the future. The goal is not just to gain experience, but to develop into a global talent by gaining a deep understanding of Japanese society through life and studies in Japan.

Experience while studying abroad

During my exchange program at Himeji Dokkyo University, I was able to achieve significant growth both academically and personally by engaging in diverse educational and cultural experiences.
First and foremost, the Korean-Japanese and Japanese-Korean translation courses allowed me to enhance my practical language proficiency. These classes went beyond mere vocabulary and grammar; they focused on context, nuance, and the linguistic and cultural differences between the two nations. Through repetitive practice and constructive feedback, I was able to elevate my reading, writing, and overall communication skills to a more practical and professional level.
Beyond the classroom, I broadened my regional understanding by traveling throughout Hyogo Prefecture. Visiting historical sites and cultural landmarks allowed me to experience Japan's heritage firsthand. Himeji Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site, left the deepest impression on me, providing a profound understanding of Japanese fortress architecture and the flow of medieval history. I also visited the Kitano Ijinkan district in Kobe, where I learned about the city's unique history as an international port through its Western-style architecture. Furthermore, seeing the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge in Maiko allowed me to witness Japan’s modern engineering prowess. These experiences helped me develop a multi-dimensional perspective on Japanese society and regional culture.
Additionally, I had the opportunity to socialize with Japanese students through after-school exchange programs organized by my professors. By discussing our daily lives, cultures, and values, I was able to gain a deeper understanding of Japanese culture while also sharing my own Korean heritage. These interactions were instrumental in fostering a multicultural mindset.
Through these diverse activities, I have grown significantly as a Japanese Studies major and as an individual. This exchange program was more than just a stay abroad; it was a pivotal opportunity to deepen my academic expertise and refine my future career goals. I am sincerely grateful for the invaluable experiences and growth this program has provided.

Results of study abroad, future goals

Through this exchange program in Japan, I have achieved meaningful results across my language proficiency, way of thinking, and overall career vision.
The most significant achievement has been the substantial improvement in my Japanese language skills. By constantly immersing myself in the language—not only in the classroom but also through daily life and local interactions—I have become capable of much more natural and flexible communication than before.
Furthermore, my time as an exchange student has allowed me to adopt a multicultural mindset and a broader perspective. Engaging with Japanese students, experiencing the local community, and communicating with people from diverse backgrounds taught me the vital importance of respecting and understanding different cultures and viewpoints. I believe this will be a crucial asset for my future career in an international environment.
These experiences have also given me the confidence and motivation to take on new challenges. My deepened understanding of Japanese society has inspired me to set a new goal: participating in a Working Holiday program. Through this, I aim to gain practical social and professional experience, further strengthening my ability to live and work within Japanese society.
Upon returning to Korea, I plan to complete my degree in Japanese Studies with dedication and, after graduation, pursue my dream of becoming a flight attendant. I am confident that the Japanese proficiency, cultural insight, and intercultural communication skills I developed during this program will be significant strengths in serving international passengers. This exchange program has been a pivotal turning point in clarifying my career goals, and I will continue to strive toward becoming a truly global professional.
