Opportunity of the studying abroad, purpose

I did some research on fisheries technology in the Department of Fisheries Technology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Bangladesh. The latest research is on the seasonal variation in composition, quality, safety of freshwater prawn and saltwater (marine) prawn. This research is on the final stage. I previously wished to conduct research on seasonal variations in the composition, quality, and safety of Japanese fisheries products. With this purpose I contacted Professor Daisuke Kimura about the possibility of a collaborative research. Having been invited by Professor Nobutaka Kurihara, President of Kobe Women’s University I visited Japan under the financial support of Hyogo Prefectural Government of Japan.

Experience while studying abroad

Greetings with Professor Nobutaka Kurihara, Honorable President of Kobe Women’s University, Professors of Kobe Women’s University of Japan. Discussion with Professor Daisuke Kimura about the possibility of a collaborative research. Both Professor Nobutaka Kurihara and Professor Daisuke Kimura expressed the opinion that collaborative research is possible if we find grant/fund for such collaborative research.
During our stay in Japan, Prof. Kimura and I visited several ports in Hyogo Prefecture to collect basic information on the Fish and Fishery products. The photo shows one of the sights seen at the central wholesale market. After visiting several fishing ports and markets, I strongly believed that the cold chain is a key factor in the safety of fishery products in Japan. However, to promote this in my home country is not a problem I can accomplish on my own, so I have renewed my commitment to my idea of promoting preservable processed seafood.
During this research in Japan, I had the experience of discussing with professors and graduate students. They expressed their opinions about my proposed research. One is polyphenols and the other is fat-soluble vitamins. Polyphenols and vitamins have anti-cancer effects. Therefore, I submitted oven-dried samples of giant freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) and giant tiger prawn (Penaeus monodon) that I brought from Bangladesh for Professor Kimura to detect and estimate polyphenols and vitamins.

Results of study abroad, future goals

Unfortunately, due to the time spent on the extraction method, we were not able to detect vitamins, but we were able to detect polyphenols in each sample extract and examine their antioxidant activity. The results of the analysis were very interesting, showing that freshwater prawn has more anti-cancer capacity than the sea prawn (salt water prawn). We will continue to analyze vitamins and other parameters in the future.
Knowledge and information on Education system in Japan particularly in Kobe Women’s University is important, and may be useful in Bangladesh. Academic Knowledge and research information I gained abroad are useful for my teaching and research at University. Some information may be used as reference for future research. Information on fish and aquatic invertebrates of Hyogo Prefecture is quite interesting about number and size. Marketing of fish in Kobe wholesale market is also following a distinct pattern. I learned and experienced a lot during this visit, and I would like to thank the HORN project, Professor Daisuke Kimura, and the members of Kobe Women's University for their support. I would like to repay them by submitting a paper.
