Opportunity of the studying abroad, purpose

I would like to think about the ideal education and educational environment for minority children and pursue multicultural education that can be realized in japan. When I was doing childcare activities, I thought that to understand more children, I should learn about education more broadly and broaden my perspective, too. At Evergreen State College, there is a lot of research being conducted on multicultural issues and there is a curriculum where we can learn from a variety of perspectives in a single class. I would like to learn how to realize multicultural education through participation in such lectures and programs.

Experience while studying abroad

Finally, my last class began in April. Through the classes I have taken so far, I have not only deepened my knowledge of education and psychology, which I wanted to study, but I have also been learning how to express my own opinions in an easy-to-understand manner, and to state with considering backgrounds in other fields. I feel that I have been able to acquire a variety of skills through the classes. In addition, there are many opportunities to join in discussions in class. Although I still often find it difficult to express my opinions using English, I am glad when I can make use of my position as an exchange student from Japan, as I can sometimes compare the U.S. and Japan and express my own opinions. It makes a chance to learn about my country again.
During a long vacation, I went to Arizona State. I was overwhelmed by the spectacular scenery created by many years of time and felt as if I was on another planet. Not only the sightseeing spots but also the scenery I saw while traveling was so beautiful that I spent hours looking at it from the bus. It was my first time traveling alone in the U.S., and although I was nervous at first, I was glad to have experienced such a special opportunity.
I can't believe that I only have three months left to go back. I will try my best in everything I do so that I will have no regrets.

Results of study abroad, future goals

By looking back on my 9month studying abroad experience, I feel that I have achieved the goal that I had set before of learning about multicultural education that can be realized in Japan.
First of all, At The Evergreen State College, I had the opportunity to learn about multiculturalism on a daily life such as LGBTQ. For example, I had the opportunity to introduce my pronouns (she/her, etc.) as my first introductions and to exchange ideas with my Native American friends about our history, language, and identity. These opportunities also helped me to reflect on my own identity.
Second, by joining the three semesters of classes, I had chances to learn education from a wide range of perspectives and it helped to understand education to be further deepened.
At the college, there is a unique interdisciplinary learning environment and it allowed me to deepen my studies without being limited to a specific department. In particular, the last class, on education for traumatized children and children with developmental disabilities, was a wonderful integration of the education, psychology, and psychopathology that I had studied before then. In addition to the lectures and readings, the discussions of the class also gave me the experience of being open to new values and ideas.
Third, I was able to learn how multicultural education is actually conducted in the US through the volunteer work I did as a tutor at a local elementary school in Olympia, Washington. It also gave me an opportunity to think practically about how multicultural education can be realized in Japan. Furthermore, visiting local high schools and participating in Japanese promotional events also played a big role in broadening my perspective.
Although my study abroad experience ended very quickly, it was a very valuable experience for me to continue to learn toward my goals for 9 months. And now, I still continue to hold online conversations with students from Evergreen State College to exchange language and ideas. Through these activities, I hope to maintain the attitude of openness to new ideas and language skills that I gained while studying abroad without forgetting. I am still thinking about my specific future goals and career path, but my study abroad experience and the opportunity and exposed to a multicultural environment have broadened my perspective, and I would like to explore future directions without being limited by conventional boundaries.
