Opportunity of the studying abroad, purpose

I am a lecturer and researcher at the Department of Physical Therapy, Faculty of Medic and Health Sciences, Udayana University. My research interest is about the rehabilitation among elderly especially with dementia. Besides, i have an interest to the care facilities and nursing home in Japan. It has been known worldwide that Japan has the best system and facilities for the rehabilitation for the elderly which different with Indonesia, especially Bali. Therefore, through this visit, I intend to learn about care work and rehabilitation for elderly professionally at Kobe Women’s University. Purpose of the visit are to share and change ideas, and to discuss about the care facility and rehabilitation system for elderly and establish research collaboration which at the end can strengthen the academic and research collaboration between Kobe Women’s University and Udayana University.

Experience while studying abroad

In one month of the visit, I was under supervision of Assoc. Professor Kimura Ai, who is experienced in social worker and care worker training especially for elderly and people with dementia. In the first week, I visited an event held for the elderly with dementia in order to make them socialize with people more and enhance their confidence. This experience made me to be able to learn how to treat elderly actively with their own dementia condition. In the second week, I presented a lecture about the rehabilitation among elderly in Indonesia especially in Bali to the 3rd years students. We had a discussion about it and I found that there are many differences between Japan and Indonesia. I learned how Japan governance put a serious attention to increase the welfare of their elderly. I also joined to the care worker class at the laboratory and practiced many types of bed making as a care worker student. In the third week week, I visited many of care facilities for elderly. First, I visited Kema-Kiraku—En in Amagasaki. This nursing home has a day-care, short stay and long-stay program. It was very different with Indonesian nursing home. I found it very a good idea to have a day care with elderly. It only has one physical therapist and one speech therapist. I had a discussion with their PT about their rehabilitation program with elderly and she also showed me its facilities. Second, I visited Tarumi-Sumire-En. It is not a usual nursing home, it is a long-term care facility that had a great rehabilitation program for elderly who has just out from the hospital. Their comprehensive rehabilitation team is amazing. They have it complete from the doctor, physical therapist, occupation therapist, speech therapist, nurse, and care givers. Third, I visited Yamate Sakura-en, located at Motomachi, Kobe. One thing I found interesting at the facility is that they have children café event every Wednesday. I joined it as a visitor and found very amusing to be able to interact with Japanese children. Fourth, I visited Sunny Pier Hospital and long-term care facility. It has a complete rehabilitation tools for exercise and they also using a electrotherapy modalities for treatment. I had discussion with their rehabilitation supervisors and got new information and share about our own rehabilitation system and dementia treatment. In the 4th week, I had a chance to have a discussion about the system and care facility in Japan for elderly, the treatment for dementia and the insurance system in Japan with professors and an experienced physical therapist. Assoc. Professor Kimura Ai and I also joined The Japan Association of Training Institution for Certified Care Workers in Hokkaido. At the last week in Kobe, i visited nursing home a nursing home called Rokko no Yakata. Rokko no Yakatta has a high technology robort for elderly with dementia recreation. They have people and seal robot. I saw that elderly love to interact with these robots and enjoyed their time. I found it interesting that how a nursing home facility put a big effort for entertaining and also taking care elderly with dementia.

Results of study abroad, future goals

During one month, with assistance of Assoc. Professor Kimura Ai, I obtained all the objectives planed for my visit to the Kobe Women’s University. I learned about system for rehabilitation and care facility for elderly and enriched my knowledge about the treatment for people with dementia. In the future i have a goal to establish a better rehabilitation system at the nursing home in Bali and also joint research with Kobe Women's University about Elderly with dementia rehabilitation and care. I did satisfy with the visit and I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Hyogo research network grant for the financial support.
