Opportunity of the studying abroad, purpose

I've been interested in Japan since I was an elementary school student. It was my dream to study in Japan one day. After I became a college student, I found that there is a program called ‘’exchange student’’, which provides me a chance to achieved my goal. Then, I applied for it immediately and succeeded to go to Japan after some procedure being down.

I set up four goals before I arrived here.
First, I want to improve my Japanese skill. Although I’ve been studied Japanese in Taiwan for a long time, I still can’t use it to do some professional works. Therefore, throughout this period in Japan, I hope I can have the ability to do some professional translation works in the future.
Second, I want to study comics seriously. Though I majored in animation in Taiwan, I’ve loved Japanese comics since I was a child. For the reason, I want to learn the skill in Japan, in which the comic industry has been very booming.
Third, I want to enhance my animation skill in Japan. Though there are a lot of courses about animation in Taiwan already but courses relating to story, storyboard… etc. are extremely few. Consequently, I want to upgrade skills that I didn’t learn in Taiwan. At last, I want to make friends with Artists from all over the world and communicate thoughts and feelings with them.

Experience while studying abroad

Coming here for six months, I’ve experienced a lot that I never did when I was in Taiwan. Thanks to my teacher, I got a chance to draw a cover and some pictures for a novel which will be published in January next year. Additionally, I attended a training camp with the badminton club of Kobe Design University, home-staying with Japanese family… etc. As the only foreigner, I experienced a lot of communication problems but eventually I got over it and succeeded connecting with many people.

Also, I found my dream in Japan. It has been a big puzzle for me to figure out which one is the career I really want to explore for the rest of my life among the various fields that I’ve been studied like animation, web design and so on. I tried to intern in different companies. However, it made me sad that I still could not find any I liked even though I was going to graduate soon. Then, I started to learn comic and illustration arts in Japan, and I am glad to have lots of encouragement from teachers. After I got the hands-on experience of professional illustrator’s work, I finally concluded that the only job which I can indulge is a comic and illustration artist. This is the key I’ve pursued over the years. I know this is not an easy-access job. Nevertheless, during the rest of my exchange student period, I want to try my best to do anything that can help me to reach this dream.

Results of study abroad, future goals

In this year I have achieved almost all the goals I had set before.
Within the campus, I have learned the knowledge about story-composing and storyboard which i have urged to study for a long time. I still need time to get used to but it really helps me a lot. From now on I want to create more works using what I have learned and gained the hands-on experience from the working process.
Outside the campus, the book which I draw the front cover has been published in Japan. I think it will be the start of accessing to the illustration industry in Japan and Taiwan. Before I returned to Taiwan I also attended an event called "Syuccyo Hensyusha" where publisher and artist meet together and I received four business cards from publishers, which means they are willing to give me advice about my new comic work. I want to create lots of works with my publishers and aim to be a professional comic artist.
Apart from achievement of my career, I also learned a lot about interpersonal relationship. I made friends with Japanese, Korean, Chinese and etc, Everyone came to Japan from different countries for different purposes. We exchange our thoughts, custom and culture everyday. Sometimes they are different because we are from different countries but sometimes they are very similar even we have different backgrounds. Human being is extremely complicated. I always tried my best to increase my understanding of it. Throughout this year, I think my comprehension has been progressing a lot.
At last I have done everything I could to connect to the world during the year. I communicated people, traveled a lot, saw many things that I have never seen in Taiwan, and I finally reached my conclusion:" the diversity of the world is such beautiful".
I have cherished every moment during my exchange program. Thanks to that, I have built up plenty of strong connections in Japan. I love all of them from my heart. I will keep them in my deepest forest and will move on.
