The opportunity of studying abroad is my visit to the Philippines as a volunteer in the orphanage before. At that time, I faced the reality of life for the poor, and I knew the effects of the disparities on people . Also, as I was involved with children and people around the same age, I could expand the range of nonverbal communication. On the other hand, I was felt sad because of my poor English. So, I was determined to become able to communicate by using language more accurately, and more easily.
Therefore, there are two purposes of my study abroad.
First, it is to know the background and the way of thinking of people. I want to communicate with local students, or the other students studying abroad and understand the diversity. And I want to mature and make use of studying nursing with that.
The second goal is improving the skill of language. I will study actively not only English also Filipino language, and technical terms. And I want to be able to do effective communication.
These are my purposes.
I’m learning a lot from life in Philippines and I’m having a great time. In the university, I get the opportunity to see things from different angles, for example, the view of work in foreign country and the ideas about the poor. And the job performance of a woman of the same age and Japanese has high language skills stimulates me every day.
And the internship in the general hospital started. The hospital is famous of the well-equipped so there is the lounge for foreigner patients, the hotel for patient’s family. Such in a favorable environment, I was guided in the hospital and I participated in the training for newcomers and I always realized the difference of nursing between Japan and Philippines. Also, I heard the difficulty of nursing for foreigner patients. This experience became the opportunity that the feeling for my dream is getting stronger. I will learn actively the rest of the time.
In Philippines, I realized differences between Philippines and Japan everyday. For example, I feel the difference of languages, medical treatment, and more. And the most surprising thing is the way of thinking for others. In Japan, sometimes I feel strongly we are indifferent toward others. However, in Philippines, not only English teacher or nurse in the hospital but strangers, cleaning staffs speaks to us friendly. In addition, they helps us whenever we don't know how to do. Furthermore, in the hospital I did the nursing internship, new nurses taught us politely how to contact and show respect for foreign patients. I asked a new nurse the reason why Filipino can concern someone and she taught me the policy originates from Christianity for Filipino. I feel respect deeply for Filipino and I think such a way of thinking makes Filipino-Hospitality.
In the future, I will get the license of medical translator and work as a nurse. In Japan but also toreigners, I want to help patients not only Japanese. I will make use of this experience in my study and my dream will come true.
